At the outset, I would like to express my deep gratitude to the distinguished membership of the Indian Psychiatric Society for giving me an opportunity to deliver Dr D L N Murthy Rao Oration. Dr Murthy Rao was one of the foremost psychiatrist in our country and as a Professor and Director of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences, Bangalore, he not only trained many eminent psychiatrists, but was also instrumental in setting good traditions in academic psychiatry. I had the honour of meeting Prof. Murthy Rao and listening to him in 1962 when he visited the Central Institute of Psychiatry at Ranchi.
